Just sayin’ hi

Not too much going on here. We’re dog-sitting Rory this week while his parents are in Israel. He’s a super-sweet guy, and I’m almost as in love with him as I am with Dwight.

I had a nice, long weekend. We played Neptune’s record release party on Saturday and had a great time. They decorated the whole stage with live plants, and as usual, were totally amazing. They’re one of the few Boston bands who have been playing about as long as we have, and it’s been really good to play with them the past few times.

If you don’t know much about Neptune, there was a story on them in The Dig last week. Jason makes all of their instruments, and the band was born out of his thesis. They’ve been going strong for a long time, and you can have a look at their website for more info.

Macky’s hat

This Flickr photostream kills me. Macky’s owner knits (crochets?) hats for her papillon. Some have beer steins, some ears of corn. All are good.

Dwight’s alright

We have a new man in our lives. Dwight is the new addition to the family! He’s a 3-year old retired greyhound, straight outta Tucson. I think he’s in for a big shocker come winter… but I predict many long nights knitting dog sweaters for the handsome man.

His racing records can be found online by tracing his tattoo numbers — he ran sixty-one races and had 4 wins. Go Dwight! That’s a lot of running!

When we brought him home, Peanut walked straight up to him, took a sniff, and then stood off to the side and checked him out. Kiya, on the other hand, has been living in the closet. This will change with time, I’m sure.

We’re enjoying long walks in the park, spoiling him with treats, and watching him sleep (16 hours/day!).

Looking at things more closely

My friend Jenny sent me this link a couple of weeks ago, and I just got to looking at it a little closer tonight. It’s Nikki and the Dogs, and she’s a friend of ours who lives out in L.A. She was often around when I was working in the darkroom at Emerson College, and she’s lived with Jenny and been a close friend to her for a long time. Besides being an amazing photographer, and somehow managing to capture the very essence of the animals in her images, Nikki does all she can to save dogs from being euthanized. You can just see for yourself with her before and after shots. These animals would have a much different, much more difficult life, if Nikki didn’t do what she does. And I think that’s really awesome of her.

Nov. 1

I knew my birthday was shared with Lyle Lovett, All Saints Day, and Larry Flynt, but I did not know it was also World Vegan Day. Woo hoo! (I’m not vegan, but I don’t eat the pigs or cows.)

So, for my World Vegan Day this year, I’d like to request the following:
1. no surprises, just presents
2. presents should include a dog, preferably a mutt
3. a copy of “one skein wonder” pattern
4. someone pleaseforGodssake be my final iPod referral
5. lame list, that’s all I can think of right now

I have a serious problem with buying yarn. I have sofa king much yarn, but not enough of any of it to make any of the patterns I have in my nerdy knitting binder. (Except I do plan to make the the Hello Yarn Cycling Aran for Sean and if he’s into the color, I think I have the right yarn.)

I bought a bunch of this super-soft Malabrigo yarn to make the Hot Lava Cardigan and silly me did the wrong kind of increase for like 40 rows before I even realized how terrible it looked. I think I’m a total knitting spazz. I always screw something up and take ten times longer to get started than most people do. Last night I decided to dig around and found some leftover oregano-colored Brown Sheep. So I started to knit this bag that I’ll felt but the silly rabbit that made the pattern didn’t give a final size (and this silly rabbit didn’t think it through thoroughly)… so I think I’m going to rip it and make it much bigger. I have these funny black handles that I want to affix to the top.

Anyway. Today we’re sneaking in to our friends’ house while they’re on the Cape to grab a chop saw (I think that’s what it’s called). Then we get to build shelves in our closet all day — all beautiful day. It will be the greatest when it’s done though.
